Service Description
The Fergana Valley is famous for its many traditional crafts, the history of which is closely intertwined with the Silk Road. These include: - Silk and ikat production. Margilan, one of the ancient cities of the Fergana Valley, has been famous for its silk production since the 10th century. Local artisans learned silk weaving techniques from the Chinese and perfected their skills, making Margilan silk fabrics a valuable commodity traded along the Silk Road. - Ceramics. For example, Rishtan ceramics are renowned for their distinctive turquoise-blue finish, often decorated with traditional floral and geometric patterns. - Knife making. Knife making in the Fergana Valley is an ancient tradition, dating back to the Silk Road and even earlier. Some historians believe that the famous Damascus steel—a technique in which several types of metal are bonded together to create an incredibly strong blade—originates in the Fergana Valley. The excursion program includes: visits to workshops and participation in master classes by outstanding masters of their craft - the world-famous and outstanding ceramicist of Uzbekistan Alisher Nazirov (Rishtan) and hereditary blacksmith, one of the representatives of the "usto" profession, Hasan Umarov (Kokand); a visit to the Yodgorlik Silk Factory (Fergana).
